Ethylene is required in tobacco to successfully compete with proximate neighbours

چکیده

Plants sense neighbours even before these cause a decrease in photosynthetic light availability. Light reflected by proximate neighbours signals a plant to adjust growth and development, in order to avoid suppression by neighbour plants. These phenotypic changes are known as the shadeavoidance syndrome and include enhanced shoot elongation and more upright-positioned leaves. In the present study it was shown that these shade-avoidance traits in tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum ) are also induced by low concentrations of ethylene. Furthermore, it was shown that transgenic plants, insensitive to ethylene, have a delayed appearance of shade-avoidance traits. The increase in both leaf angles and stem elongation in response to neighbours are delayed in ethylene-insensitive plants. These data show that ethylene is an important component in the regulation of neighbour-induced, shade-avoidance responses. Consequently, ethylene-insensitive plants lose competition with wild-type neighbours, demonstrating that sensing of ethylene is required for a plant to successfully compete for light. Interactions between ethylene and gibberellins in phytochrome-mediated shade avoidance responses in tobacco.

Plants respond to proximate neighbors with a suite of responses that comprise the shade avoidance syndrome. These phytochrome-mediated responses include hyponasty (i.e. a more vertical orientation of leaves) and enhanced stem and petiole elongation. We showed recently that ethylene-insensitive tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants (Tetr) have reduced responses to neighbors, showing an important ro...

Application of Zeotype SAPO-34 Molecular Sieve as a Selective Adsorbent for Separation of Ethylene from Ethane

The process of ethylene production from ethane dehydrogenation is one of the interesting processes in the field of conversion the petroleum light gases to the valuable products. In this process, the outlet gaseous product is a combination of ethylene, ethane and hydrogen. Effective separation techniques are required for separation of ethylene from unreacted ethane. Here a new adsorbent approach...

The Tobacco Industry and Pesticide Regulations: Case Studies from Tobacco Industry Archives

Tobacco is a heavily pesticide-dependent crop. Because pesticides involve human safety and health issues, they are regulated nationally and internationally; however, little is known about how tobacco companies respond to regulatory pressures regarding pesticides. In this study we analyzed internal tobacco industry documents to describe industry activities aimed at influencing pesticide regulati...

Tobacco Translationally Controlled Tumor Protein Interacts with Ethylene Receptor Tobacco Histidine Kinase1 and Enhances Plant Growth through Promotion of Cell Proliferation.

Ethylene is an important phytohormone in the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress response throughout the lifecycle. Previously, we discovered that a subfamily II ethylene receptor tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) Histidine Kinase1 (NTHK1) promotes seedling growth. Here, we identified an NTHK1-interacting protein translationally controlled tumor protein (NtTCTP) by the yeast (Saccharo...
